You can’t always tell by looks alone, but in today’s world the difference between this vegetable and that vegetable is greater than at any other point in human history.
By the end of world war two in 1945, the US chemical companies had ballooned into a massive industry, having been subsidized by the federal government to produce weapons and munitions for the war effort for years. With the war ending, the chemical companies anticipated a huge drop in demand for their weapons. They desperately needed to rebrand and find a new outlet for their chemical products.
Their solution? A chemical based form of agriculture, where crops are grown in a sterile soil medium and fed regular doses of chemical food, doled out by the chemical companies for a tidy profit. And what to call this new agriculture? The “Green Revolution!”
Under this new system, the process of growing food was changed from a practice that had been fundamentally the same for thousands of years, into something completely new and untested. Machines and chemicals would do the work instead of humans. Food ceased to be grown with care and reverence, and became instead a mass produced commodity – a product to be sold. On this commercial scale of value, visual uniformity, long storage life, and ease of transportation won out over flavor and nutritional content. Even simple considerations like is this food product harmful to eat? were sidelined in pursuit of the almighty dollar.
The tragic result is that most of the ‘food’ now eaten by the human population is tasteless, empty of nutritional value, and toxic to us and our environment.
Keep It Real Vegetables is the opposite of this food model. Our vegetables are grown using no synthetic chemicals, and no genetic modification. Instead of growing monocultures of a single vegetable in sterile soil, we grow a living system of many different crops in fertile, healthy soil that is rich with biological life and organic matter. We grow heirloom varieties that are unique and full of flavor and nutrition. And our produce is as fresh as it gets, with typically less than a day or two from our field to your kitchen. The slight difference in price is more than made up for by the huge difference in flavor, freshness and quality – as you will quickly discover once you taste our vegetables.
Compare our vegetables to your average (even organically grown) vegetables, and you will see that there is no real comparison.
Keep It Real Vegetables vs. Regular Vegetables
We offer vegetable varieties chosen for full flavor vs. bland tasting varieties chosen for long storage life / ease of transport
We offer vine ripened produce harvested at the peak of freshness then delivered immediately to market vs. produce that has been stored for long periods in coolers and on refrigerated trucks during transport
Our produce is loaded with vitamins, minerals and micronutrients as a result of extreme soil fertility vs. vegetables low in nutritional content and laced with synthetic chemicals due to low soil fertility and chemical fertilizer and pesticide use
We grow unique, unusual and interesting heirloom vegetable varieties vs. boring, typical varieties produced en masse for volume markets
Our practices are good for the environment because we grow locally on a small scale using ecologically conscious techniques, without synthetic chemicals or GMOs vs. agricultural practices that harm the environment because they are grown far away in large monocultures using synthetic chemicals and GMOs, then packaged and shipped long distances using large quantities of fossil fuels / fossil fuel based materials
Our business is good for the local economy because we are a small local business supplying other small local businesses and individuals putting money back into the local economy vs. other farms that harm the local economy by funneling profits back into national and/or multinational companies, removing money from the local economy
We promote fair and ethical treatment of farmers by providing a living wage and not exposing our workers to conditions hazardous to their health vs. exploiting farmers by not paying a fair wage and endangering them by exposing them to unsafe and/or toxic work conditions
For all of these reasons and more, hopefully you will agree that Keep It Real Vegetables are vastly different from, and superior to, your average vegetable.
